Hi Breandán - thanks for leaving a comment. There’s nothing like getting a new flute and I’m sure you are going to be very happy with your new Doyle. Love the ‘leg of a chair’ comment by the way - very funny! Will be in Eire myself in late April and looking forward to visiting Clare.

I live in Ireland myself and am waiting on Martin to make me a flute which will probably be ready in a week or two. I cant wait to get it, they’re such a beautiful flute. The flute I use at the minute is like blowing into the leg of a chair (not really but production made) so my new Martin Doyle is gonna be a real treat. Ordered a flute similar to the one displayed. It’s a keyless D in African blackwood, only with a silver tuning slide. I hear their tone and quality are first class.

I believe the tune is Emily’s Reel. It’s played in a set with a slow air, Gan Ainm on an album he did a while back. I have it on my iPod from iTunes. It’s an amazing performance by him-you can’t even see him crann!

You’re so right! Grafton Street is a wonderland… the music around every corner, my favorite was the slide guitar… don’t know his name, but he was amazing.
I was there in Oct 2007 and it will forever hold a special place in my memory bank.

Hi Amanda,
Very little difference, if any, in price between African Blackwood and European/Irish woods. 'D' flutes are most commonly used in Irish traditional music - 'C' flutes have a deeper tone and the holes are further apart. Mostly the 'D' flute is used in sessions. As Martin Doyle is the flute maker whose flutes I promote and offer, I would suggest that you visit his Flutes and Prices page to see info about waiting times etc. You can email him if you have further questions or wish to place an order.
